What's New in 2026 — A Sharper, More Practical MicroBalkans

By MicroBalkans Organizing Committee

Past editions of MicroBalkans gave us the foundation. MicroBalkans 26 sharpens the format to focus squarely on the practical challenges facing non-bank lenders in our region. Here are the seven things that will feel different in Skopje.

1. Practical focus

Every panel is grounded in Western Balkans market reality. No "AI-first lender of 2030" abstractions. The question is always: what is actually working in our markets, and what isn't?

2. Fireside chats instead of keynotes

We are replacing formal keynote slots with candid 1-on-1 fireside conversations. The first one — The Lender Who Went Digital First — pulls a CEO who bet the company on digital transformation onto the stage to share what actually changed and what they wish they had known.

3. Interactive lunch tables

Lunch on Day 1 will be themed tables led by moderators:

  • Legal & compliance
  • Product & UX
  • Collections & recovery
  • Technology & data
  • CEO & strategy

You pick your peer group. After lunch, each table shares its key takeaways with the room.

4. A hands-on workshop

Mid-afternoon on Day 1, we run a practical credit-scoring workshop: 15 minutes of framing, then a 30-minute small-group exercise scoring a thin-file applicant using only data points actually available in a Western Balkans market today. No vendor pitches. No slide-ware.

5. Startup Pitch Stage

Five regional lending and fintech startups pitch live to the MicroBalkans community on Day 2. The audience votes for the MicroBalkans Startup Award 2026, with a jury of investors, lender CEOs, and technology leaders providing feedback.

6. Innovation Expo

Live product demos run throughout every coffee break — not a static booth area, but rotating short demos from regional fintech vendors and partners.

7. Three optional afternoon activities

After the closing lunch on Thursday, you choose:

  • Canyon Matka — boat tour, Vrelo Cave, light refreshments at a canyon-side restaurant (≈ 3h)
  • Skopje Old Bazaar — guided food and culture tour, Kale Fortress views (≈ 2h, ideal if you have an evening flight)
  • Macedonian winery — vineyard and cellar tour with wine, cheese, and charcuterie pairing (≈ 3h)

If you haven't already, view the full agenda or register your interest. We'll publish more news in the coming weeks as panel rosters and venue details are confirmed.
